œdema and Swollen Limbs

Do you know why your arm swells after a treatment for breast cancer? In the thorax, armpit and shoulder are a large number of lymphatic circuits and ganglions for draining lymph from the arm. Surgery and radiotherapy for breast cancer traumatises these, thus preventing them from performing this draining action; fibrosis barriers develop and the lymph is blocked. The size of the arm swells rapidly, the skin thickens, the arm becomes heavy and movement is impaired.

Sciatica

Sciatica is the term given to the pain that is felt in radiating downward from the gluteus muscles (the buttocks) into the leg which is caused by irritation of the main nerve into the leg, the sciatic nerve. Normally is it thought to be caused by compression or entrapment of the sciatic nerve but this is not necessarily so. The pain can be excrutiating for some which can start in the lower back and move to the side or backs of the leg. Alternatively, others will suffer only mild sensation in these areas.

Though the exact cause of sciatica is not fully understood it is commonly thought to involve a slipped or herniated disk. This means one of the disks, which lie between each of the vertebra in the lower back (lumbar area), has cracked and allowed some of the inner disk material to protrude out, putting pressure on the adjacent nerve root, which in this case is the sciatic nerve.

Using various massage and stimulation techniques in combination with stretching exercises, we can help alleviate the pain and discomfort.

Lymphatic Drainage

here at Usha's Beauty Clinic we have three methods to perform lymphatic drainage:

1 - Using the Cellu M6® Keymodule Medical
Lymphatic drainage is a delicate form of massage that stimulates the body’s lymphatic system. Developed in the 1930s, this techniue helps the body to eliminate toxins and waste products which helps to boost the metabolism and clears blockages from the body allowing the transportation of nutrients to pass through.

The lymhatic system is responsible for regulating the body's immune system by keeping the body free from toxins, waste and bugs. When the lymphatic system becomes blocked, fulids accumulate and become stagnant and toxic. This toxicity leaves us feeling sluggish and prone to infection and disease.

The controlled suction of the Cellu M6® Keymodule Medical gently lifts and rolls your skin, to deeply massage the affected areas, increasing the cutaneous blood flow by 400 percent (Laser Doppler measurements) and lymphatic flow by 300 percent (Lymphoscintigraphy measurements). In today's fast-paced world we all encounter stress at one levek or another. It's our body's natural way to deal with pressure, crises or excitement and can be a good thing. It becomes harmful when the pressure becomes too much. If life's demands exceed your ability to cope, stress becomes a threat to both your physical and emotional well-being. Common stress reactions include tension, irritability, inability to concentrate, and a variety of physical symptoms that include headache, muscles pain and a fast heartbeat.

Tension and stress over an extended period can cause muscle and connective tissue to tighten and shrink. Using either one of our manual massage treatments or the Cellu M6® Keymodule Medical machine, deep tissue massage is performed at varying levels of downward pressure directly into a muscle group to break up scar tissue that causes pain and inhibits range of motion. The Endermologie techniques also work by lifting bound connective tissue that limits your muscles from being properly repaired and aligned.


In addition to pain relief, the patient will feel a wonderful sense of relaxation and well-being afterwards.

Moles and Red Spots

Recent studies have shown that certain types of moles have a higher-than-average risk of becoming cancerous. Some may develop into a form of skin cancer known as malignant melanoma. Sunburns may increase the risk of melanoma. People with many more moles than average (greater than 100) are also more at risk for melanoma.

Moles known as dysplastic nevi or atypical moles are larger than average (usually larger than a pencil eraser) and irregular in shape. They tend to have uneven color with dark brown centers and lighter, sometimes reddish, uneven borders or black dots at edge. These moles often run in families.

Recognizing the early warning signs of malignant melanoma is important.

Remember the ABCD's of melanoma when examining your moles:

• A stands for ASYMMETRY, when one half of the mole doesn't match the other half.
• B stands for BORDER, when the border or edges of the mole are ragged, blurred or irregular.
• C stands for COLOR, when the color of the mole is not the same throughout or if it has shades of tan, brown, black, red, white or blue.
• D stands for DIAMETER, when the diameter of a mole is larger than 6mm, about the size of a pencil eraser.

If a mole displays any of these signs, it should be checked promptly by a dermatologist.

Moles and red spots can be unsightly in severe cases.

There are two treatments however for people that wish to remove them using non-surgical techniques.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
Using laser or IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), the red pigment in spots absorbs the light energy and becomes very hot. This heat destroys the blood vessels within it.

Laser Mole removal invovles releasing laser light energy to the targeted area. The laser light energy is absorbed only by the pigment in the skin, which is then broken up and "carried away" by the body and absorbed during the healing process.

Advanced Electrolysis
Advanced electrolysis procedures red spots are one of the optimal ways of treating them. Using electrolysis, we are able to use a probe to cauterize the spot without damaging any of the surrounding tissue. The body then absorbs the scar tissue over four to six weeks. There is virtually no pain associated with this particularly if a topical anaesthetic such as an anaesthetic cream is applied to the area before treatment begins.

Water Retention

Fluid Retention, known as oedema, can occur for a wide variety of reasons. This condition is the abnormal accumulation of fluid in parts of the body, particularly the ankles and legs.

Fluid retention is a common problem, and can even occur due to standing for too long or even if you have been on a long flight. Sufferers often find the skin goes tight and hard and can lead to a very uncomfortable feeling.

Many people find that massage can help to disperse the fluid around the body, so relieving the problem.

Muscle Spasms

Some times people have an awkward feeling of tightness in muscles of their back, neck arms, or legs. Sometimes, sports persons, athletes or the people involving in strenuous activities get cramps in their muscles. Both these forms are known as muscle spasms.

A muscle spasm is an unexpected, sudden, abrupt involuntary contraction or over shortening of any single muscle or group of muscles. It can be also a temporary and sudden arise of emotion, energy. Generally it is characterized by sudden burst of unpleasant, painful sensation.

Massage therapy is used to treat muscle spasms by applying pressure or vibration to the soft tissues of the body such as the muscles, connective tissues, tendons, ligaments and joints. Using deep-tissue pressure and/or more superficial stroking motions, it may be used on all or part of the body to loosen and relax the muscles, manage pain, improve circulation and relieve stress and tension.
